This breed has a lovely temperament and are a loyal, loving dog. They are extremely intelligent which is a big plus when it comes to training. Their greatest joy in life is to spend time with their family. Although they love a walk, they are also quite happy to lie and sleep all day.

One of the biggest health problems found in this breed is a condition knownn as Dermoid Sinus. This condition unfortunately can only be fixed in very rare cases, in most cases there is not cure and it can be quite painful for the dog. If buying a Ridgeback puppy you should have him/her checked for this condition before purchase.
Another problem in large breeds is Hip Dysplasia and once again this should be checked before purchasing a puppy and it is also recommended to ask about the parents of the puppy whether they had any hip problems.
Bloat is one other condition that can affect large, deep chested dog. When your dog has been exercising or eating, let them wait five to ten minutes before drinking which can go a long way in preventing bloat. If your dog shows any sypmtoms of bloat you should take him to the vet immediately.
Rhodesian Ridgeback Exercise Requirements
A daily walk will be enjoyed and your Ridgeback will love to get out and about and be quite active running around. When he comes home he will usually switch back to lazy mode and be quite happy to sleep.
They aren’t a hugely active breed and wont pester you constantly to go on walks, they are quite happy to laze around. It is important for their health and fitness though to take them on daily walks.

This breed is quite easy to keep clean being a short hair dog. A weekly brush will keep their coat shiny and healthy. They are big so they can be a handful when trying to bath so it’s a good idea to get them use to a bath from when they are young.

As with most large breeds a Ridgeback will generally live for around 10 to 12 years. A good healthy diet and good living conditions will help your dog to live a healthy and long life.

This wonderful breed was bred originally to hunt lions and their size and appearance will often give the impression that they might be an aggressive dog, in actual fact they are a very placid, gentle breed. Although gentle, they are still very loyal and protective of their human family.
Because they are such a large breed and are quite powerful it is important to have proper training with your Ridgeback so that they become well socialized and also so you can take them for a walk without them ripping your arm out of the socket. They will need daily exercise and it is best to be able to take them out for a walk without worrying about being able to control them.
Although this breed are generally not aggressive, they are very big and because of their size they can sometimes, unintentionally, cause injury by accidentally knocking someone over. This is particularly so with small children so it is important to supervise children while around large dogs. Ridgebacks just don’t realize how big they actually are and when they get excited they can easily jump up and knock someone over.
All dogs are naturally pack animals and every pack has a leader. * When you feed your dog let him sit or stand and wait for his food. Put his bowl of food down in front of him but don’t let him go to it yet. Tell him to stay and then wait for a few seconds before giving him a command to eat. It will only take a few times of doing this for him to know what is expected of him.
* Always make the dog enter or exit the house last. When you are going through a door, don’t let him rush past you, make him wait until all humans have gone through the door and then let him through.
* Always use an authorative voice when disciplining your dog and stand over him to give him the impression that you are bigger and stronger and this will let him know that you are his superior.
It is important for a large dog breed to know his place in the pack, after all you don’t want a large, strong dog being the boss of the house. He needs to know that you are his superior and he must obey your commands.

Attending dog training classes is important with any dog as it helps socialize them and also helps them learn basic commands like sit, stand, stay, heel. After attending dog training classes you should be able to walk your dog without him pulling you along or without him trying to chase every other dog he sees.

The Ridgeback Rhodesian or Rhodesian Ridgeback dog is a large breed of dog that is very agile and muscular. The breed will vary on weight depending on sex but on average would weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. The male dogs will measure between 25 and 27 inches and the bitch will measure between 23 and 25 inches.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks can come in one of two colors – a lighter ‘wheaten’ or a darker ‘red wheaten’. The main distinctive feature of this breed is the ridge that runs down it’s back. The hair on this ridge grows in the opposite direction than the rest of the hair on the dogs body. A Ridgeback has a lifespan of around 10 to 12 years.

Hip dysplasia can also be a problem in this breed so it is recommended that you have a puppies hips checked before purchasing. another condition that affects large deep chested dogs is bloat. Bloat is an extremely serious condition and if you suspect your dog has symptoms of bloat you should take him to your vet immediately.

We have owned a few different types of dogs over the years and about 5 years ago we adopted our Rhodesian Ridgeback.
